What is round-dance

Similar to the Square Dance, the figures to be danced are announced by a "Cuer". So all couples dance the same characters at the same time. Thus, there is no "traffic jam" or "collisions" on the dance floor.

The term "round dance" gets its meaning from the formation in which the dancers move across the dance floor. Namely in a large circle on the edge of the dance floor.

Unlike the "free" standard and latin dancing, there is a fixed choreography for each piece of music that is played. Depending on the popularity of the piece of music, there may also be several choreographies of varying degrees of difficulty (phases I to VI).

The specified choreographies are read by a cuer from the so-called "cuesheet" (translated: keyword sheet). In the countless choreographies it is, in short, impossible to have all the dances in mind.

In addition to the well-known rhythms, like
  • Slow waltz,
  • Viennese waltz
  • Rumba,
  • Cha Cha Cha,
  • Slow Foxtrot,
  • Jive,
  • Tango and
  • Quickstep,

which are common in a dance school, Round Dance offers a variety of other dances like

  • Bolero (American Bolero),
  • Mambo (comparable to salsa),
  • Paso Doble,
  • Samba,
  • Slow Two Step (Nightclub Two Step),
  • Two Step (similar to Polka),
  • Merengue as well
  • West Coast swing

Through Roundalab, the international umbrella organization, the countless figures of the respective rhythms are divided into phases I to VI. Thus, the difficulty of a dance can be easily determined.

If you want to get excited about round dancing, it starts off small. At the beginning of the "Round Dance Career", the dancers learn a basic set of Level A, B and C figures (comparable to Phase I to III) in a beginner's course, the so-called Round Dance Class. The subsequent workshops at various events worldwide or within one's own club build on these figures.

So, round dancing is a hobby that requires discipline and patience.
